History of European Immigration

History is not always pleasant to look at. Sometimes we try to run from it, when we should embrace the good and the bad from it. If we don't acknowledge the bad, history repeats itself.

People wanted freedom from dictatorships, prisons, genocides, oppression, poverty, scarcity... We are here for a number of reasons. Let us remember those so that we don't allow the same problems appear here.

Few random facts you probably didn't know

* The country was even named after an Italian, the explorer and geographer Amerigo Vespucci.

* In recent years researchers have followed administrative categories for race and ethnicity, even when these are acknowledged as having no scientific or anthropological validity. (Recommendations From the Interagency Committee for the Review of Federal Measurements of Race and Ethnicity. Washington, DC: Office of Management and Budget; 1997.)

* Over 5.4 million Italians immigrated to the United States between 1820 and 1992. Today there are over 26 million Americans of Italian descent in the United States, making them the fifth largest ethnic group.
