History of European Immigration

History is not always pleasant to look at. Sometimes we try to run from it, when we should embrace the good and the bad from it. If we don't acknowledge the bad, history repeats itself.

People wanted freedom from dictatorships, prisons, genocides, oppression, poverty, scarcity... We are here for a number of reasons. Let us remember those so that we don't allow the same problems appear here.

Few random facts you probably didn't know

* First California Constitution (1849) was printed in both English and Spanish. 'All laws, decrees, regulations and provisions which from their nature require publication shall be published in English and Spanish.'

* 'Old' immigrants, who came mainly from western Europe, did not like when 'new' immigrants started coming mainly from Eastern and Southern Europe.

* With the Immigration Act of 1924, a number of immigrants who could be admitted from any country was limited to 2% of the number of people from that country who were already living in the United States in 1890. It also excluded immigration to the US of Asians.
